no it’s a workstation. mean’t for spread sheet and technical numbers crunching and with the right Video card rendering. But yes could also be a nice little server.

what do you plan on using this for? Just a general-purpose PC? it’ should be fine. Gaming PC? Nope. not enough RAM, and Xeon systems tend to use ECC and/or Registered memory which is expensive and slow(er.)

CAD workstation? might work (I have an HP xw8400 I’ve pimped up with a Quadro) but that listing doesn’t even say what kind of GPU it has.

All of our parts are stored on a network drive - SSD isn’t going to make any meaningful difference.

We need better CPUs and better and more modern GPUs. Preferably some Quadros to replaces these fucking bullshit FirePros.

Not for me, it’s Panther Brown. That Xeon is essentially a higher end i7 of the time so... it’ll be fine for gaming. It’s the higher end Xeons with crazy amounts of cores that aren’t that great for gaming compared to i7s

CAD Design. It’s automotive based, but I don’t want to get into any specifics. UG NX is a pretty powerful CAD tool though and it has the resource requirements to boot.

Man, NX is awesome. A little bit of a learning curve, but I was always impressed with what you could do with some patience. I couldn’t imagine it on an old machine though, yikes!

Right, these are a shared platform with the i7's but there optimized for different performance needs. for instance the I’m pretty sure the Xeons QPI’s are better suited for single thread processing vs multi thread on the i7's. granted I do little work with desktop xeons, my life is mostly Haswell related. So i could be wrong.

There’s nothing particularly special on the CPU side that separates Xeons and their consumer equivalents except for higher binning on the Xeons and some differences in the controllers; such as accomodating ECC RAM, and exposing more of the CPU hardware through VTd/VTx, etc.

There is literally no difference in the actual chip if you compare equivalent i7s and E3 Xeons. “Optimization” is just a marketing word. Now E5 Xeons, with 8+ cores and low clock speeds are the ones that you’re thinking of that aren’t all that great for gaming.

Also Binned means cherry picked for quality. Intel really only makes a few chips, then the highest quality ones that come out of the process are binned to the Xeon chips. The lower quality ones with defects become i7s, i5s, i3s, and the rest with similar architecture.
